These are the Salmon Forest studs- salmon need forests, and forests need salmon. Trees give salmon healthy streams and safe places to rear and spawn. Their shade keeps the water cool, and roots and downed logs create pools and shelter. Healthy streams also support the insects salmon feed on before heading out to sea. When the salmon return, those same streams offer the cool, clear water they need to lay their eggs.
Once the salmon spawn and die, they carry nutrients from the ocean back into the forest. Bears, birds, and other animals drag their carcasses further inland, spreading those nutrients even wider. Studies have found trees along salmon streams growing up to three times faster than trees along streams without salmon. A beautiful reciprocal relationship.
These Salmon Forest earrings are handmade from layers of sterling silver, and each salmon features a different tree. One with a Western Hemlock - the most abundant tree in the Tongass. The other with a Sitka Spruce - the state tree of Alaska and second most abundant tree. Each with a different pair of turquoise stones.
